This quite spectacular photograph shows both the vivid muzzle
flash as well as the "flash in the pan" when firing a flintlock gun. Using one
of these guns under dark, or dusk conditions during wartime must have destroyed
the night vision of the marksman, as well as giving away their position to the
enemy.
