The Big
Bang!
(from a Black Powder Rifle)
This photograph shows a
.577 Snider Rifle being fired on the 25 metre range. This cartridge was produced
in several forms from 1867 onwards and saw use in the British Army. The first
cartridge cases were made of cardboard, but were soon changed to brass as a more
practical material for military use. In the gun shown, the case is of brass with
a central (boxer primer) and a propellant charge of
black powder. The load used
is at the upper limit for use on the indoor range.
